Dr Luke Beardon, Senior Lecturer in Autism at Sheffield Hallam University, is firmly of the belief that autistic adults are at far higher risk of suffering from intense and long-term anxiety compared to the predominant neurotype (his term for the majority population). His talk will be aimed at working towards a deeper understanding of anxiety, how it might impact on autistic adults, and what can be done to better engage with the autistic population.
Luke will introduce the concept of ‘autistic anxiety’ and subsequently identify why autistic adults so commonly suffer from extreme anxiety that can damage their well-being and lives; he also, however, asserts that being autistic in and of itself should not mean that individuals are anxious on a day-to-day basis. Leaning heavily on his ‘golden equation’ of Autism + Environment = Outcome, Luke will identify many of the aspects of societal influences that lead to autistic anxiety that subsequently increase the very real risk of long-term damage to the autistic population.
Luke’s belief is that the way forward to achieving his concept of ‘Autopia’ (Autistic Utopia) is far less about trying to change the autistic individual in some way, and instead to focus on changing the environment. Hard-hitting and yet optimistic, his talk will celebrate autistic life and promote better practice in the area of autistic well-being.
This lecture makes so much sense - it gave me an understanding why I often feel anxious
